How hard could it be to build a garage, I wondered. After all, I had done framing and finished out a lower level of a split-level house. My husband could read blueprints. The sellers of our recently purchased Victorian gave us a big wad of cash at closing to build our garage, so there was nothing to hold us back. Well, except a Minnesota winter that was quickly approaching, so we had to work fast.

If you've ever considered building a garage, perhaps reading about my experience, step-by-step, will help you. After I finished that project, of course, I didn't stop there. I tore out the basement stairs and replaced them, put in a kitchen island with a new dishwasher and built two decks, among other improvements. I can't stop remodeling. My husband says the first step is to admit you have a problem. I say, "Spittooey."
