Who Makes Money on Short Sales?

Home sellers who suspect their home values are upside-down or underwater today are turning to short sales as a viable solution.

Many home owners believe short sales are something new and unique to the real estate industry, but the truth is short sales have been around for a long time. The concept, however, is often misunderstood. Some well meaning real estate agents advertise homes as short sales without doing their homework to determine if the situation and the home qualifies.

Even more troubling is the fact that some agents routinely advertise to find investors to buy short sales in states such as California that prohibit real estate agents from representing most investors on short sales.

All of this activity can make a short seller wonder who is getting paid on these transactions and whether the seller can pocket some of that profit.
