If you think all the hoopla over green homes is about painting your house green, you haven't been paying close enough attention to the message being beamed from corporate boardrooms.

The clarion call is to take action on the environment, because the seas are rising, our icecaps are melting, millions of honeybees and butterflies are dying . . . But now it’s not the “Al Gore groupies” or “tree-hugging hippies” sounding the alarm, as they have for years. Now it's the Big Cheeses of the S&P 500 who say it’s time that consumers step up to the plate and take responsibility — by giving up their stingy spending habits.

They may as well be dangling a penguin by its toes while pointing a gun at its head, demanding that you hand over your VISA card or the little penguin gets it, right between the eyes. Because it's all your fault that polar bears are drowning. It's because you didn't fork over the dough to buy a fuel-efficient hybrid car, to the tune of $30,000, or because you refused to replace your wardrobe with Prada's organic cotton fashions.
