Book Review of Real Estate Agent's Guide to FSBOs

Friday December 14, 2007
Real estate agents who want to list your home for sale -- because you have it listed for sale by owner -- are the target audience for John Maloof's The Real Estate Agent's Guide to FSBOs, but even sellers can benefit from reading this book.

According to the National Association of Realtors, a very small percentage of FSBOs (for sale by owners) end up selling their homes without an agent. Most FSBOs eventually list with a real estate agent. The main reason FSBOs have trouble selling on their own is because they don't have access to a large pool of real estate buyers.

In fact, if you ask a FSBO why they are selling without an agent, one out of every two FSBOs will say it's because they want to save the commission. Maloof points to a NAR study, however, that says sellers make 32% more on the sale when they are represented by a real estate agent. Does this mean the agent does a better marketing job or is it because most home buyers hire an agent?

It's tough to sell your home as a FSBO but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try . . . read more about The Real Estate Agent's Guide to FSBOs.
