Stewart Title Offers Nationwide Services
In 1976, I had just moved to Newport Beach, CA, and was looking for a position as a title examiner at a title company. When I explained to a title manager that I knew how to search land at the courthouse from the U.S. Patent forward and could draw out metes and bounds descriptions, the interviewer's mouth fell open. He said that in California, title searchers relied on microfiche (which was advanced for the mid-'70s), so my background was not required for that kind of work. Instead, he offered me advice that changed my life and eventually led to obtaining my real estate broker's license -- which is another story, another time. "You should switch your career to escrow," he said.
Back then, Stewart Title was based in Houston and hadn't yet spread to all 50 states. But the reason I picked Stewart Title, believe it or not, was because its Santa Ana office was located on a palm tree-lined street. I love palm trees. Although not indigenous, palm trees represented California to this Midwestern kid. OK, not the best reason to take a job or change careers . . . read more about Stewart Title Company.
