Preparation is Key to Buying a Home in Another State

By November 2, 2012

Follow me on:

When a buyer first considers home buying in another state, it can cause a state of panic if a home buyer doesn't know where to first turn.

I had experience with this first hand. For example, when I decided to move from the Midwest to Sacramento, the thought of making that transition and handling all the home buying details long distance was a bit scary. I worried that I wouldn't buy a home in the right neighborhood, or that I might overpay for a home. Even worse, there was the possibility that I could arrive in Sacramento and find out my former home had not closed on time.

I too, have bought a home in another state. hubby wants to retire next year, so last year, market being what it was, was a good time to buy. all finances in order, family in wv, so we decided to do it. bought a home up there in wv, foreclosure.

ok lesson learned: be prepared, both financially, mentally, physically!! still living in another state, we have to rely on our family to take care of things unless we can go up there – with hubby still working, that leaves me (retired), to do things, setup consultations, things to be done, contractors, etc. (pest control, contractors, repair persons, deliveries etc) unless family can be there to oversee.

so, now we are getting our house in nc ready to sell for the spring, and its quite hard to get things done with both houses, plus weed out stuff, pack for the wv house, eliminate at the nc house, take care of bills for both houses, etc. Like running two households.

so cant stress enough: be prepared financially, mentally, physically!!!

Best of luck to you, Sue. I had an awful time transporting my cat and the birds, not in the same car, mind you.
