The National Association of REALTORS (NAR) has established the Realtors Housing Relief Fund to help pay mortgage payments and rental costs for families who were devastated by this week's terrorism attack on the United States.

The NAR made an initial contribution of $1,000,000 to open the fund. They are urging REALTOR members nationwide to contribute to the fund through their state and local associations, or directly through NAR. You need not be a member of NAR or a real estate agent. Anyone can contribute to the fund.

In his speech to announce the fund, NAR President Richard Mendenhall said, "Today I am asking Americans everywhere, especially members of our REALTOR family, to open their hearts and take a stand against this attack on our national security. Let's demonstrate our commitment to help those who have suffered most.  No victim's family should find itself in the position of having to lose their home because of the loss they have suffered."

Families of victims of the attacks are eligible for assistance. This includes families of firefighters, law enforcement and other emergency personnel who were injured or killed.

The NAR recognizes that many families who own their homes may not have mortgage insurance, and some families will likely have difficulties paying rental costs. The fund will provide assistance to help keep them from losing their homes. Mendenhall went on to state, "Our hope is that none of the families of these victims, who are dealing with a tremendous emotional loss, will also have to suffer the trauma of losing their homes as a result of this terrorist attack."

The fund is accepting contributions now. You can call the REALTORS Housing Relief Fund at 1-800-874-6500 or donate online by following the link in the box above.
