Definition of a GSE

By , About.com Guide

Definition: What is a GSE? A GSE is an acronym that stands for government sponsored enterprise. Mostly you will hear the term GSE bantered about when talking about short sales. A GSE short sale is handled differently than a traditional short sale. That's because the government is involved.

Types of a GSE are:

  • Fannie Mae
  • Freddie Mac
  • FHA
  • VA

Any type of mortgage servicer / provider that is owned by the government largely in whole or in part is a GSE.
